PEACE POLE CHRISTENED AT THE VILLAGE GREEN IN WOODSTOCK, N.Y.-September 21, 2008
International Day of Peace/Vernal Equinox
Submitted by Tom Kay.
On Sunday Sept. 21, at noon on the Village Green of Woodstock, NY, one of the country’s oldest artist’s communities dedicated one of the world’s most beautiful handcrafted Peace Poles.
Standing ten feet tall, made of red cedar wood, the Peace Pole monument is laser etched in stainless steel with the words “May Peace Prevail On Earth” in 100 languages. The dedication was attended by Woodstock’s Town Supervisor, local religious organizations and featured music by local superstar talent.
According to Tom Kay, of the Peace Pole committee, “In a world without art there can be no peace.” The Woodstock Peace Pole embodies the spirit of art that Woodstock represents to the world and shows our community’s commitment to peace through this artistic statement. People have called it the world’s most beautiful Peace Pole.
It was designed by master local craftsman/sculptor Jesse Reimer and built by many talented craftspeople in the community. The Peace Pole has become an instant tourist attraction. Many foreign tourists go over to the pole and find “May Peace Prevail On Earth” in their native language and touch the engraving and take a photograph. It was installed on the last new moon, and is oriented north/south/east and west.
