Rockport Rotary Plants Peace Pole in Hurricane Harvey Hit Community. Rockport, Texas

A Peace Pole dedication was held in Rockport, Texas on October 8, 2019. Rockport was severely impacted by a direct hit from Hurricane Harvey in August 2017.

The Rockport Rotary Club (RRC) hosted eight Russian citizens from the Rotary International Russian Peace Exchange Tuesday, Oct. 8 and helped plant a Peace Pole at the Aransas Pathways Pavilion next to the Tule Creek Hike and Bike Trail.

A Peace Pole is a handcrafted monument that displays the message and prayer “May Peace Prevail on Earth” on each of its four or six sides, usually in different languages. There are more than 250,000 Peace Poles in 180 countries dedicated as monuments to peace. They symbolize and simultaneously link people of all faiths and nationalities worldwide who are striving for a better world.

Rockport is located 30 miles northeast of Corpus Christi and separated from the Gulf of Mexico by a thin strip of barrier island, it took a direct hit from Hurricane Harvey. What the local people are wondering is how to pay for the extensive damage to businesses, homes and public buildings from Harvey’s 130-mph winds and how to bring the thousands of people displaced by the storm back home.

It has been over a year and still some schools do not have cafeterias for the kids to eat a meal in. This is where the Rotarian Group 5930 local chapter has taken action. Rebuilding schools and lives. It has been said “This community is very resilient and continues to extend a helping hand to those rebuilding their lives, homes, and businesses”

Rotarian groups have been tirelessly working to rebuild and plant Peace Poles along the way as a sign of Solidarity and to raise the spirits of those hit hardest.

Thank you for your tireless work for these communities in need.
