St. Vincent’s Catholic Charities (STVCC) was honored to present a Peace Pole to Greater Lansing Food Bank (GLFB) at 2800 W. Willow Street in Lansing, Michigan. The Peace Pole Unveiling Ceremony was STVCC’s acknowledgment of the instrumental role GLFB played in welcoming New Americans in Lansing.
Every Peace Pole bears the message, “May Peace Prevail On Earth” in different languages. This year, STVCC chose the following languages to reflect on the Peace Pole: English, Arabic, Dari and Pashto (two languages spoken in Afghanistan), Swahili, Kirundi, Spanish and Ukrainian to recognize the suffering of families in war-torn countries.
STVCC has resettled more than 278 evacuees from Afghanistan. Additionally, more than 75 refugees from other countries have found their safe refuge in Lansing. It takes a community to make this possible — and today was a beautiful example of our community coming together for one mission: welcoming the stranger. Without GLFB and the many other community partners’ support, determination and passion, STVCC would not have been able to successfully resettle so many families.
