Classic White Peace Pole in the mountains of Swannanoa North Carolina – USA
December 1, 2022
We live in a wooded area in the mountains of western North Carolina, in Swannanoa, just outside of Asheville. Our Peace Pole is at the bottom of our driveway, up against our mailbox so our neighbors can see it as they come and go. It’s also quite a wonderful landmark for giving directions to our house. Just in the week since we planted our Peace Pole, we have received several positive comments about it and noticed people slowing down and even stopping to look at it.
The English side faces out for all to see. Driving up the hill a person is faced with the Arabic language, hopefully to recall the besieged people in Palestine, Yemen, and the entire Middle East (as well as the responsibility our country bears for this). Coming down the hill a person can see the Cherokee language (upon whose unceded stolen land we reside). We see the Spanish when we come down our driveway as we leave home, which stirs our hearts with the solidarity we feel with those living in very difficult circumstances in Latin America and those fleeing from there to face our militarized border (due so much to US imperialism).
Seeing the Peace Pole as we come and go reminds us of what we stand for and who we are.
