Peace Poles in Ontario, Canada
April 18, 2009
At the Peace and Carrots Labyrinth and Community Garden located at St. James’-Rosemount United Church, Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, the languages on the Peace Pole are English, Hebrew and Arabic (the three Abrahamic languages), Seneca (a native language close to what the now-extinct indigenous “Neutral” Indians spoke) and Braille.
The garden was built in 2000 to celebrate the millenium and the 75th anniversary of the United Church of Canada. The labyrinth and peace pole were added a couple of years later.
The first Peace Pole I encountered was at Camp Cantebury Hills, an Anglican Church Camp, in Dundas, Ontario, Canada. That was the inspiration to install a Peace Pole at St. James’-Rosemount. Since then I have been taking photos of Peace Poles. I’ve attached some of the pictures for everyone to see.
