Jim Dugan with the students of the Burnham School

On November 7th, 2018, Jim Dugan of the World Peace Sanctuary in Wassaic, New York, USA, lead a World Peace Flag Ceremony with the students of the Burnham School in Washington, Connecticut.

Jim spoke about the current and future state of our planet, what ties all humans together and thoughts on having a meaningful life in society. Each child then proudly carried a flag from a UN Member State as everyone took a metaphorical trip around our planet and literally shouted “May Peace Prevail on Earth” as loud they could.

In the Spring the Peace Pole in the below photo will be planted on the school grounds with a time capsule inside.

Cathy Colella, the Principle of the Burnham School wrote afterword,
“The World Peace Flag Ceremony was fantastic!  It was emotional, energetic, and enlightening and I still have “happy” tears in my eyes.”

“The flags were amazing, and it was impressive to hear some of our students making connections to specific countries.”

Principle Colella with Jim and the certificate presented to the school stating 10 trees will be planted on the African Continent in the school’s honor

“Our presenter, Jim Dugan, was engaging and inspirational.  He inspired the children to open their minds to the world around them and beyond.  His message of world peace gave hope to all, children and adults, for World Peace in light of our present climate. I could not have asked for a better message to be delivered.”

Cathy went on to say, “As a school community, we wish Peace to all and hope that our little school will continue to send this special message to all we encounter.”
“Laying the foundation of a peaceful world is one of our greatest challenges.”

“Peace always starts in the home, but if we can spread it through our school community and into the lives of others then we have made a difference.”

Though small it’s famous for its peaceful tranquility housing a wildlife sanctuary with more than 500 varieties of wildflowers and 200 species of birds. “It’s a place when you visit nobody seems to be in a hurry”, reports visitmaine.com

It is also one of the most Famous Island communities in Maine. Rachel Field once said “if you have slept on an island. You’ll never quite be the same.”

Many famous artists felt the same.

The Island welcomed Rockwell Kent, Robert Henri, A.J Hammond and Edward Hopper. “Much found the quiet Peaceful setting inspirational” as camdenmainevacation.com speaks of their presence in the early 19thcentury.

The Peace Pole stands in front of a one room schoolhouse still used to this day, and enrolling students currently. “The Monhegan Island School is a treasured landmark and has been an educational springboard for generations of islanders.” According to Monheganschool.org

The school reports, The Monhegan School Mission is to provide a safe environment, which fosters creativity, cooperation, and respect. While exposing each student to diversity, educational and social experiences that connect them to Monhegan Island and to the global community.

A Peace Pole, whose premise is much like the mission of the little school it resides by. A mission to bring people together to live in peaceful harmony, foster respect and embrace diversity throughout the global community.

Evergreen Montessori Schools Plant Peace Poles as Reminder to Live in Peace San Jose, CA

Sunita Prakash of the Evergreen Montessori School wanted to add a Symbol of Peace to their three campuses. Evergreen is a Montessori School located in San Jose, CA whose Mission states: “We strive to provide the highest quality Montessori education available; emphasizing basic academic disciplines and promoting the development of independence, self- respect, and respect for others.”

On August 10th, 2018 on their Yerba Buena Campus Brittney shares,

“We planted our first Peace Pole at the end of our Summer Session in our Honoring the Light GatheringThis was our first such gathering and the purpose was to reflect on the summer the students spent learning about Peace and how to be a Peace Maker in their community”

At The Yerba Buena School Campuses Honoring the Light Ceremony, Children all help to bury Peace Pole

We gathered in the afternoon in front of the Yerba Buena school and after a short speech from our school Director, we placed a time capsule in the Peace Pole and planted it in the earth. Each child participated in putting dirt around the base of the pole.

Then the students sang songs of Peace for their parents and teachers.

“It was a wonderful way to end the summer!” Exclaims Brittney.

The students worked hard over the summer to collect money to donate to the World Wildlife Fund and to purchase our Peace Poles. This ceremony helped the staff to say thank you to the students and parents for their hard work.

At both locations the Teachers revealed The Peace Poles for the students and parents while reading the four languages chosen and placing time capsules before the Children helped to bury them.

Thank you to the World Peace Prayer Society, for sending such beautiful Peace Poles for our Schools to help remind our students, staff and parents to live in Peace.

Jack planting the Peace Pole as the sun shines down on IDP celebration

Jack Salamone, member of the Great Middle Way Buddhist Association, spearheaded the planning and planting of a Peace Pole at what is to be the sight for the Great Middle Way Mountain Hermitage in Crestone, Colorado.

Jack states “Our group is called the Great Middle Way Buddhist Association, We practice in the Great Middle Way tradition of the Jonang Lineage.”

from left to right… Colleen, Francis, Wendy, Leticia, Laura, Julie, Paul, Tashi, Kristine (my wife), Jack, Sri, Prema and Dan.

Currently Jack shares he is “helping to raise money to build the The Great Middle Way Mountain Hermitage. This will be a vegan, low cost and multi-sectarian Buddhist center intended to provide a place to practice contemplation and solitude away from large urban centers in a quiet natural setting.”

You can find more about the Great Middle Way Buddhist Association at https://greatmiddleway.wordpress.com/

Mr Salamone and his associates expressed gratitude in being able to work with the World Peace Prayer Society, as he believes,

“We hold the same views regarding the supremacy of peace and non-violence as a non-sectarian approach to living”.

The “mani” stones placed around the base of the pole are inscribed with the
mantra “om mani peme hum” which represents the union of wisdom and compassion.

On Saturday morning 22 September 2018 people gathered at the Peace Garden in Warwick Queensland, Australia to celebrate the dedication of a Peace Pole

The Baha’i Community of the Southern Downs Region wanted to leave a lasting memento to commemorate the Bicentenary of the Birth of Baha’u’llah, the Founder of the Baha’i Faith. The Peace Pole was chosen through The World Peace Prayer Society. “When we started looking in to the Peace Pole Project we found the principles of the Project resonated with the Baha’i teachings of world peace and that the earth has one humanity, one human family.”

The Baha’i Community worked with Friends of the Warwick Peace Garden and the local Southern Downs Regional Council to help see their vision come to light.

F Lenore Neville, Friends of the Warwick Peace Garden, James Lister MP, Mayor Tracy Dobie, Graeme Eldridge, Baha’i community.

“Bahá’ís believe the crucial need facing humanity is to find a unifying vision of the future of society and of the nature and purpose of life. Such a vision unfolds in the writings of Bahá’u’lláh.” per www.bahai.org

The day also celebrated the UN International Day of Peace which was on the 21stSeptember.

Local dignitaries Mr James Lister MP, Member for Southern Downs attended and spoke about peace being more than an end to conflict and the Mayor of Southern Downs Region, Tracy Dobie also spoke, dedicated and unveiled the Peace Pole.

Graeme Eldridge on behalf of the Baha’i community dedicated the Peace Pole with the words of Baha’u’llah inscribed on the pole “The earth is but one country and mankind its citizens”.

Friends at the Peace Pole dedication, including James Lister MP and Mayor Tracy Dobie. The feature of the dedication was the saying of the words “May Peace Prevail on Earth” by people in eight different languages, – English, Hindi, Spanish, Dutch, Pidgin English (PNG), German, Tagalog (Filipino) and Farsi, highlighting the bringing together of people from different countries.

Afterwards all enjoyed refreshments, and people lingered, discussing the Peace Pole and ongoing plans for the Peace Garden.
