On August 17th, the Rotary Club of Tehachapi formally dedicated a Peace Pole at Centennial Plaza in downtown Tehachapi.  Having qualified as Peacebuilding Club, the Club was excited to have a Peace Pole installed after seeing one of its Interact Clubs, at Valley Oaks High School, have one installed on its campus in May.

The city of Tehachapi was a tremendous help in deciding the location, doing the physical installation, and publicizing the event to different media in Tehachapi and Bakersfield.  The 8 languages on the Peace Pole are English, Spanish, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Chinese, Ibibo (a Nigerian dialect), and Kawaiisu, a Native American language local to the Tehachapi area.

The Club was blessed to have District Governor Marta Golding Brown attend as she was making her official visit to the Club that day.  In addition, Past District Governor and current District Rotary Foundation Committee Chair Nick Frankel was present.  Nick was the inspiration for the Club to erect a Peace Pole when he presided over an installation at the Taft Fort during 2022’s KernYES.  Also making the drive was Assistant Governor for Group 1 Mary Lundstrom, District Secretary and Assistant Governor for Group 2 Kay Pitts, and Fernando Aguirre, District Vocational Director.

In a show of support for the Rotary Club of Tehachapi, Mayor Michael Davies and city councilpersons Joan Pogan-Cord and Susan Wiggins also attended, along with City Manager Greg Garrett and Community Engagement Specialist Key Budge.

JOSEPH — The Rotary Club of Wallowa County will unveil its second Peace Pole on Thursday, Sept. 21, on the grounds of Wallowa Lake Lodge, 60060 Wallowa Lake Highway.

A short ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the lodge and is open to the public.

The ceremony coincides with the International Day of Peace, also known as World Peace Day, which is celebrated around the world on Sept. 21, to promote the ideals of peace within and among all nations.

“We wanted to choose this date to tie in our local club’s efforts with the International Day of Peace,” said Rotarian and Peace Pole committee member Judy Allen. “The Rotary Peace Pole is a handcrafted monument erected the world over as an international symbol of peace. We are proud to be considered by Rotary as a Peacebuilders Club, and to be installing our second Peace Pole in the county.”

With the efforts of local artist and woodcarver Steve Arment, the first Peace Pole was designed and built, with the words “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in nine different languages. Rotarians Ron Polk, Tom Gleasman, and Ralph Swinehart helped install the first Peace Pole near the gazebo on the Wallowa County Courthouse lawn in May 2022.

This second Peace Pole was also designed and built by Arment and will also feature “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in nine languages, with English, German, Norwegian, Spanish, Japanese and Nez Perce featured on both poles; Ukrainian is featured on the Peace Pole at the lodge; Arabic and Chinook Jargon are featured on the courthouse Peace Pole.

“There have been a lot of people, Rotarians as well as other community members, who have worked to bring these two peace poles to our county,” said Rotary President Jeff Fields, who took office July 1. “We’re proud of the work they have done, and of the statement our local Rotary club is making to encourage the ideals of peace. It is especially meaningful to have a pole at this new location which is such a key part of the legacy of the Nez Perce Tribe’s homelands.”

The Peace Pole project is the official project of The World Prayer Society. It began in Japan in 1955 in response to the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Rotary International, with 1.5 million members in 35 countries, has been part of the proliferation of Peace Poles around the world, with over 250,000 installed worldwide.

June 2023

The Peace Pole is an internationally recognized symbol and monument to Peace, launched in 1955 by Masahisa Goi of Japan. In a moment of great inspiration, Masahisa Goi awakened to the need to spread the message, “May Peace Prevail on Earth,” in the hearts of the global community, and eventually led to the creation of the international Peace Pole movement.

The solar powered peace pole was first conceived in 2014 by community leader/peace activist Melvin Giles and partner Mary Salter who wanted to enhance the Peace Pole experience by creating an illuminating solar powered Peace Pole so that people could enjoy its symbolism and spirit during the night hours, as well as, as to increase night-time safety. However, Mary passed away before it was built. In 2016, Melvin made the first solar powered peace pole also called Mary’s Peace Pole, in her honor, and unveiled it at the National Afternoon Out event at the Aurora-St. Anthony Peace Sanctuary Garden. Melvin has continued his work with the students from the Imhotep Science Academy (ISA) to build and distribute Peace Poles to cultivate peace in the hearts, minds, homes, and neighborhoods in order to build a more loving community. He also gave ISA students permission to use his concept to create various solar powered illuminating peace poles to help him spread peace.

A 15’ Solar-Powered Illuminating Peace Pole, the first of its kind, was created as a new sculpture for Western Sculpture Park to coincide with the first Wakpa Triennial and the 27th Community Peace Celebration. It fulfills a dream of Public Art Saint Paul to add a Peace Pole at the Park, where the annual Community Peace Celebration is held and where other programs take place each year with diverse communities gathering together. The Peace Pole Sculpture was designed and built by many hands, minds, and spirits. Artist Gita Ghei designed and fabricated with ISA students the pyramid that crowns the pole, giving it a unique artistic flair that will spread light through its dichromatic- colored windows. Anura Si-Asar, ISA Coordinator, facilitated this opportunity with the students at Imhotep Science Academy, who focus on engineering, design, solar power, sustainable energy, and building skills; designed and assembled the Peace Pole.

The Peace Pole features “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in eight languages—English, Spanish, Karen, Hmong, Somali, Oromo, Arabic, and Dakota. These languages were recommended in community engagement events at the Park by local residents. Solar panels charge batteries during the day that then power a light that illuminates the phrases of peace at night.

We hope that seeing these messages of peace will impact people’s daily lives and minds to intentionally cultivate and foster peace in ourselves and in our society.

The primary purpose of the Rotary International Convention is to stimulate, inspire, and inform Rotarians at an international level while advancing the strategic goals of the organization. It is also the Annual Business Meeting of Rotary International.  Rotary International is an international service organization whose stated human rights purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and to advance goodwill and peace around the world.

The Convention is the most valuable conference ever won for Melbourne, with the four-day event anticipated to attract more than 20,000 Rotarians from around the world.

The Convention begins on May 27-31, 2023, using superb venues, Rod Laver Arena, and the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre.

All activities and events are within the Heart and Soul of Melbourne.

This was all made possible by a unified approach between the Melbourne Convention Bureau, Rotary Club of Melbourne, Rotarians from five local Districts, Melbourne City Council, State Government and Team Melbourne partners. They have come up with a package that is bound to thrill delegates.

This win demonstrates what can be achieved when we all collaborate and work together.

The sublime benefits for local Rotarians include:

  • Showcasing Melbourne to International Rotarians
  • Continuing the partnership of five local Rotary Districts
  • Local visibility and publicity for what Rotary achieves
  • Engagement of Rotarians in new events
  • Providing a magnet to attract new members

May Peace Prevail On Earth.

Planted in the open area in front of the Auburn Library, the “Peace Pole” looks like the Washington Monument in miniature.

But there’s nothing miniature about what this monument has to say on all four sides in eight languages, including Twulshootseed, the native language of the Muckleshoot Tribe: “May Peace Prevail on Earth.”

Thanks to the Auburn Rotary Club, whose members built it.

On July 24, Rotary Club of Auburn’s immediate Past President Sunil Khanal and Auburn Mayor Nancy Backus unveiled the monument before Rotarians, representatives of the Japanese American community, the Sons of Italy, the Filipino American Community, the Ukrainian American Community and Auburn residents.

Robert Whale / Auburn Reporter
The Peace Pole in its place in front of the Auburn Library.

Masahisa Goi created the first peace pole in 1955 in the wake of the destruction wrought by war, including the atomic bombs the United States dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

Today, thanks to Rotary International, which took up Goi’s cause in the 1950s and ran with it, Auburn is now home to one of an estimated trove of 250,000 like monuments of peace, scattered across the landscape of every nation on Earth, according to a recent article from Rotary District 4020, whose jurisdiction encompasses the Auburn club.

The Peace Pole may be international in scope, but this particular monument was a local project, made right here, with good old Auburn and Rotarian know-how, according to Auburn Rotarian Robert Hardy, who built it.

“When Rotary took it under their wing, Peace Poles started popping up all over the place, and I had just read an article about it, and started to build one with leftover pieces of metal,” said Hardy, who is employed by Miller Steel Fabrication on the west side of Auburn.

Hardy and an electrical engineer designed the pole with back lighting. Shawn Murphy with American Powder Coating did the finishing, Bruce and Cheryl Amundsen of Definitive Solutions Technology did the water-jet-cutting and letter design, and Daryl Faber, director of Auburn Arts. Parks and Recreation, gathered all the languages to put on the pole and helped coordinate the overall project with the city of Auburn.

“September is Peace Month for Rotary International, and all the different cities or clubs are going to be putting the Peace Poles they’ve placed around in our flyer. We were a month ahead of them,” Hardy explained.

“It’s pretty cool, especially at night. I put blue LED’s in it, and it just shines. It’s pretty amazing. Most of these poles are made of 4×4 pieces of wood, and people just paint on them. No one’s ever gone to this extreme in putting one together,” Hardy said.
