I remembered Mr. Mario Fungo, the Peace Representative from the Philippines, when I participated online in the first Global Peace Pole Day held on November 22, 2020; which was Mr. Masahisa Goi’s birthday. He contributed to world peace activities for more than 30 years, planted many Peace Poles, and passed away on the 22nd of March, 2020. I thought, “If he were still alive, how happy and proud he would have been to participate in this day! As one who had been in contact with Mario for more than 20 years, and had nurtured our friendship as soul mates, I felt the urge to express my gratitude for the activities with him.

Mario loved the Peace Pole so much. As far as I know, he has helped build more than 70 peace poles all over the Philippines, and I sent 45 of them from Japan. I myself visited the area five times and worked with many people to erect peace poles and hold peace ceremonies.

I was particularly impressed by the Peace Pole planting during the war memorial service held in Municipality of Bauan, Province of Batangas. I received an article in English about the massacre of Filipino civilians by the Japanese military at the end of World War II. My heart ached as I learned for the first time that more than 100,000 people had been killed in Manila alone, and hundreds of churchgoers in Bauan had lost their lives. I left for the Philippines alone with a heavy heart.

Mario has been building a network with many people through peace activities, and this Peace Pole was requested by a non-profit organization that wishes to transcend the pain of war and promote friendship between the Philippines and Japan. More than 300 villagers participated in the mass, followed by a requiem prayer ceremony, erection of the peace pole, and I gave a speech. Planting the peace pole with the strong determination for peace and the role of requiem had a really deep meaning. When I developed the photos, I found many orbs and mandalas (what looked like mandalas) in the air. Even now, a memorial service is held every year, and the peace pole is working as a symbol for peace.

On the grounds of a Catholic church, a Peace Pole was erected over the un-exploded bombs that the Japanese left in the Philippines. The students performed a dance with the message, “Let’s learn from war and keep the peace” while joining hands to sing a song of peace.
Mario had been interacted with friends who believe in different religions, such as Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and the Baha’i Faith, and to bring people together in a sense of peace that transcends differences and nurtures the youth. I always found it wonderful to see the tolerance and cheerfulness of people expressing peace with dancing and singing.

At the kidney hospital, high schools and universities, Mario’s network was demonstrated by the planting of a peace pole. Every year, we held a Peace Ceremony and Peace Walk in conjunction with the UN Peace Day. I hope that people will continue to do so after Mario’s passing.

As a Peace Rep, Mario was always very active. He was very practical and showed his appreciation for plants and the earth by planting trees, for example. I also worked with him to teach the children about the importance of nature by planting trees and hiking with them. The peace pole that we built with the sisters who practice natural farming was also a result of Mario’s interaction, and they were grateful.

Continuity is power and treasure! I am deeply grateful to Mario for spreading the May Peace Prevail On Earth message throughout the Philippines, and continuing to sow the seeds of the importance of praying and practicing peace among many people, especially the youth. He is a friendly and warm person who has encouraged, helped and loved many people, and has been encouraged, helped and loved by many people in his life.

When Mario was hospitalized in March of 2020, the Philippines was already experiencing the Corona Virus. His niece Norma, who loved and respected Mario like a father, took the lead in taking care of him, until he departed on the 22nd. She gave birth to her fourth child, a boy, on May 3. His name is Shinjiro Mario. He seems to be a reincarnation of Mario-san. When I first met Norma, she was a high school student, and now she is a mother of four. It’s as if Mario is telling me, “Take care of them!

May peace be in the Philippines, May Peace Prevail on Earth. Mario! Thank you for your support from heaven.

May Peace Prevail On Earth International’s Headquarters at the World Peace Sanctuary in New York formed a working alliance with Trees for the Future, trees.org, 10 years ago with help of the imagination of Peace Pole Maker Jim Dugan.

Today marks the movement’s achievement of 3,500 Classic White Peace Poles planted globally with the environmental impact of 35,000 trees planted too.

This decade long partnership has allowed ten trees to be planted on the African Continent for every single Classic White Peace Pole crafted at our Sanctuary in Wassaic, NY. An innovative move on Jim’s part, making sure to help the environment as well as spreading the global message of Peace.

This Peace Pole pictured above is being gifted to Wavy Gravy and Jah Romney along with their incredible staff at Camp Winnarainbow in California. Wavy has devoted his life to creative activism on behalf of peace, justice and good humor and has helped May Peace Prevail On Earth, with Jim Personally, lead many World Peace Flag Ceremonies at the Gathering of the Vibes Music Festivals. Wavy and Jah created and have led the diverse and inclusive Camp Winnarainbow for forty-five years providing a place for young people to thrive, learn and feel. A place where they continue to advocate for a peaceful, sustainable and harmonious world.

This 3,500th Classic White Peace Pole has the Message May Peace Prevail on Earth ™ adorning it’s 4 sides in Chinook Wawa, an Indigenous language spoken from Northern California to Alaska, English, Japanese, Persian, Spanish, Tagalog, Tibetan and Vietnamese.

This is Peaceful Sustainability in action.

Aiming to be among one of the first girls in the United States to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, Riley Lee of Discovery Bay, CA planted three Peace Poles at St. Anne’s Catholic Church on July 8, 2020.

It’s been more than nine months since Boy Scouts of America launched Scouts BSA, its leadership development program for boys and girls ages 11-17. By allowing young ladies the exact same opportunities Boy Scouts has offered their male counterparts for over 100 years, girls who have seen their brothers and friends benefit from the programs are now going all in on the program.

Working with the church’s pastor, Father Ron Schmit, Riley planned, organized and raised the funds to complete the project.  The three Peace Poles represent the Holy Trinity and are planted in locations significant to Parish Community: One near the small Chapel, The second at the entrance to the Community Life Center, and the third near the Garden Gazebo.

Each Peace Pole reads “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in English with the remaining languages carefully chosen to represent the diversity of St. Anne’s parish. Riley intended to promote inclusivity and acceptance when creating these.

To learn more about Riley’s Eagle Scout Project and St. Anne’s Peace Poles, please visit her website at:  www.stanneeaglescout.com

Thank you to Riley Lee for helping to spread the message of Peace as well as pave the way for many girls to follow in her footsteps.

Ixtapa-Zihuantanejo became the first city in Mexico and the world to launch the Amigo de la Paz Peace and Sustainable Tourism Program. The Amigo de la Paz Tourism Program is designed to recognize cities, companies, and civic organizations that support ecology, a sustainable environment, quality education, enhancement of cultural heritage, and other UN Sustainable Development goals.  Hotels, restaurants, schools and businesses have signed up to participate in this groundbreaking campaign to spread peace through tourism highlighting the message Que La Paz Prevalezca en La Tierra – May Peace Prevail On Earth.

Patricia Ann Talley who is developer and international director of the program activated dozens of communities in the area to raise awareness of global peace, harmony and compassion. Friends and supporters from around the U.S. flew to Mexico to witness the launch of this inspiring program

Zihuantanejo Flag Ceremony and Celebration around Peace Pole

The weeklong Amigos de la Paz Art, Culture, Peace and Tourism Festival, started with festivities in the town of Zihuantanejo on 16 February around a monumental Peace Pole which was crafted by local artisans and unveiled in 2010. The opening festival program was attended by local scout groups, international guests, cowboys from the area on horseback, community leaders and representatives from the local indigenous nations who blessed the event with ceremonial offerings and prayers. Honorary local speakers included, Patricia Ann Talley, developer of the Peace Tourism Program, Gabriella Pasqual, Art & Culture of Zihuantanejo, Wendy Carbajal Sotelo of the Zihuantanejo Peace Community among other local and state officials .

After the scouts presented a spirited World Peace Flag Ceremony around the Peace Pole, they led us in a Peace March through the city of Zihuantanejo to the municipal basketball court where a large group of local supporters waited to witness the Amigos de la Paz Sustainable Peace Tourism Award Ceremony. Awards were handed to individuals and organizations in several categories serving the community.

Every year on the International Day of Peace, Good News Broadcast, led by Paul Sladkus, hosts the Peace Day Party in the northern triangle of Time Square in what is called Father Duffy Square.
Times Square is often called the “Crossroads of the World” where people representing a myriad of cultures and traditions come together in the heart of New York City.

WATCH and LISTEN to May Peace Prevail On Earth going out to the world from the heart of New York City Time’s Square!

The Peace Day Party was a three hour celebration with speakers from not-for-profit organizations, singers, dancers, musicians, a fashion show and the event even created “the biggest human peace sign” right in Times Square.

Along the front of the stage, our international Flags representing all the 193 United Nations Member States was decorated.  The same flags have been all over the globe including the DMZ at the border of North and South Korea. Colorful messages of peace and a large banner with the words “May Peace Prevail on Earth” was visible on stage including a Peace Pole. “May Peace Prevail On Earth” on every Peace Pole is such an important phrase held in the hearts of every peace activist, thousands of school children, politicians, members of the military and are the words found on every Peace Pole across our planet.

Jim Dugan, from May Peace Prevail on Earth International, addressed the crowd during the Peace Day Party sharing the importance of being on the planet at this time and how the actions of each one of us are so important leading to lasting effects on the future of all life on this tiny planet. He also spoke about the work of May Peace Prevail On Earth International and the Peace Pole Project urging everyone in earshot to be a hero in their own lives and in the lives of those around them. The peace message, May Peace Prevail On Earth, was then repeated three times together by the thousands of people that were in Time Square at that moment. Those powerful words of peace rang loud and clear through the skyscraper canyons of New York City to be carried in the hearts and minds of those in attendance on that great day and well into the future, a future where we all must work hard so the message of “May Peace Prevail on Earth” rings into every corner of our world and the world of all those who follow in our footsteps.

The International Day of Peace celebrations at the United Nations traditionally opens with a Peace Bell ringing ceremony in the Rose Garden.  In the presence of ambassadors and their representatives from various UN Permanent Missions, UN Secretary general, António Guterres, rang the Peace Bell to open the IDP celebrations.  May Peace Prevail On Earth International flags representing each of the 193 member states of the United Nations were carried by international students during the opening ceremony as it has been an annual tradition for the past decades.

Following the Rose Garden opening, the annual Student Observation of the International Day of Peace brought together the efforts of students and grassroots organizations from both local and global intentions to the historic building of the United Nations for a celebration and urgent attention towards under the timely theme, Climate Action For Peace.  At exactly noon, our May Peace Prevail On Earth Peace Bell made of recycled weapons of war, was rung to send a peace wave to every corner on earth during the moment of silence that followed.

The students expressed a sense of urgency among attendees – presentations and conversations of sustainable practices concerning fashion, agriculture, and pedestrian acts pervaded in the hall of Conference Room 4, while questions concerning carbon emissions, horticulture and water took hold of the event. The audience enjoyed a collaboration by famed musicians and Messengers of Peace, Midori, and Yo-Yo Ma, as well as a presentation by Xiuhtezcatl Martinez, youth director to Earth Guardians, prior to his presentation at the Climate March called upon by Greta Thunberg in Battery Park. This year’s youth moderator was the Honorable Kehkashan Basu.

The Veterans For Peace (VFP) 34th Annual Convention – Sacred Lands, Sacred Lives, Peace Knows No Borders. A Piece on Peace written by Peace Representative Renee Marie.

This convention was held in the occupied land of Spokane, WA.  Indigenous elders were present and offer all attendees a sacred reminder of The Peaceful Way to live.

I have a passion for service above self.  I crave social, economic and environmental equity, accountability and justice for.  These conditions thrive where there is peace (the absence of ALL violence).  I have been a Volunteer World Peace Representative since 2001.  I also served in the U. S. Army from 1983-1991 and again from 2001-2017.  My desire and courage to free oppressed people was seduced by the advertising slogan, ‘Be All You Can Be, because we need you in the Army’.

Once in the military, the culture of comradeship takes hold.  For 20-years I reminded myself that I was ‘needed’, that I could make a bigger difference in so many hearts working from inside ‘the lion’s den’, and that being in the Medical Service Corps somehow made my military participation ‘honorable’. I referred to myself as a ‘military dove’ or ‘peace warrior’. I always wanted to “win the peace”.

I came to the convention to share my unique mission, Peace Poles For Schools, which I began in 2001. I have shared this person mission as a Presenter at the VFP convention.  My workshop, titled, ‘A Tangible Peace On Every School Campus’, was well attended and appreciated.  Participants joined me in completing an Art Peace Pole which will be gifted to all at the convention closing ceremony.

Also gifted were handmade origami Peace Dolls (bookmarks), MPPOE stickers and buttons.  In addition, 30 mini Peace Poles graced each of the closing banquet tables and were later gifted to: VFP Directors, Board Members and Administrative Staff as a token of gratitude for their enduring work for a more peaceful world.

The World Peace Sanctuary of May Peace Prevail On Earth International will forever radiate healing and inspiring energy in collaboration with Veterans For Peace.
