We hosted a small community event at Allanton Peace Sanctuary on Sunday the 7^th of August to commemorate the 77th anniversary of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and all the other places around the world living under the threat of nuclear power or weaponry. 

We held a beautiful little flag ceremony in the Peace Pole Henge to pray for all the countries of our precious planet. 

We were joined online by many of our friends and global family and performed a Divine Spark IN for each continent.  

We also celebrated the beginning of the Harvest Season with the Celtic holiday of Lughnasadh.

It was joyous and filled us all with hope and wellbeing.

The day was filled with music by local musicians young and old spreading glee and joy to all participants.  A flurry of workshops and presentations were offered throughout the day including Aikido demonstrations, Japanese Tea Ceremony experience, Shintaido movements along with a fair-trade cafe all the while the line at the organic ice cream stand never ceased to stop.

The highlight of the afternoon was the World Peace Flag Ceremony which was held at the Peace Pole Henge.  All participants followed the sound of singing bells and gongs to make their way to the Henge where a Peace Pole dedicated to all countries of the world are planted in a circular Henge.  World flags were handed out one by one to all the participants who then walked into the Henge to stand next to the Peace Pole they represented.  The flags were raised when the name of the countries were called out and a loud refrain of MAY PEACE PREVAIL ON EARTH was recited in unison at the end of each section.

For the grand finale, all 193 flags gathered at the center of the Peace Pole Henge as the flag bearers waved their flags in tune to the melody of the choir.  At the very end, a mysterious gust of wind arose to flutter the global flags in the wind to carry our intentions of peace to every corner on earth. It was a truly magical way to end the day of festivities.

This land, essential to Judaism, Christianity and Islam, has suffered millennia of conflict

“It was a good learning environment, the kids looked happy, and, for me, it was a chance to be with beautiful Arab women, powerful women.”

Despite underlying tensions, people continue with their lives. They may be manipulated to fear the ‘other’, but, as we discovered, community-by-community, ordinary people are doing their bit to promote peaceful relations.

At the Tur’an Elementary School, the teachers are integrating education with the local community. Not only are they celebrating their Arab cultural roots, but, through an art project, are collaborating with the nearby Jewish and Christian schools. Striving for coexistence, multicultural discourse and universal values.

“All the children ran to be in the photograph with the Palestinian and Israeli flags – peace in their land is really important to them.”

The children joined in our Flag Ceremony. Each took a flag and, continent-by-continent, they came to the centre of the circle and we appealed for peace in each country of the world, ending with the Middle East

At The Ein Shemer Kibbutz, two hours north of Tel Aviv, we met “Seeds of Peace”, motivated and influential Israelis working for conflict resolution, not just in Israel-Palestine, but also around the world.

“We had a one-hour Soul of WoMen (SoWM) workshop. We talked about the Fuji Declaration and the need for balance in our societies, that we don’t know what the outcomes should be, but SoWM offers a ‘think tank’, and we’re developing ‘tools’ for people to use everyday.”

How were these Israelis inspired by Soul of WoMen? Some of their thoughts were: Mother Earth. Giving hands. Soul. Harmony. Accept each other. Love. Hope. Communities. Smile. Acknowledge the other. Empathy. Peace.

“Together we planted a Peace Pole, and, in support of the peace march: “Women Wage Peace”, happening in Israel whilst we were there, we sang “We Shall Overcome” at the end.”

Our last visit was to Kafr Qasem, a village that suffered a huge massacre of women and children, in 1056. We held a Symphony of Peace Prayers with Sheikh Raed Badir, representing the Islamic community and Eran Dubovi representing Jewish communities sharing prayers from each religious community.

At the following Flag Ceremony, Eran Dubovi held the Palestinian flag and Sheikh Raed badir held the Israeli flag.

The Kafr Qasim Massacre occurred on October 29, 1956. The tensions between Israel and Palestine are still apparent, the significance of this Flag Ceremony with shown flags held together gives hope for the future.

The 18^th World Peace Festival was held at Allanton World Peace Sanctuary, Scotland on Sunday 11^th September 2pm – 6pm. We were well prepared for all weather as we had a very large marquee which had been used for the ‘Soul of WoMen’ conference the previous day. The weather was cloudy but warm, and some of our visitors spent time walking in the grounds and looked around the lovely walled garden.

Around 300 people enjoyed an afternoon of beautiful live music from local musicians: Darcy DaSilva who writes and sings her own songs, Greg Lawson (2^nd violin of the Scottish Orchestra) and Pete Garnett (piano accordion), Wendy Stewart who is an internationally known harpist, Pete and Anna Tagg who played the Taiko drums.  There was Aikido demonstrations and also exhibitions from many local groups. The Fair Trade Groups café provided home baked goods and drinks during the afternoon and delicious ice cream was available from Glen Urr, a small local company.

The theme of the Festival this year was ‘Diversity in our Community’ and exhibitors included:  ‘Freedom from Torture’, which is a group that supports people who have survived torture; MOOLS (Massive Outpouring Of Love), which is a group who help refugees in any way that they can, and DG Voice, a group who help disabled people to have a ‘voice’ in society.

The World Peace Prayer Society also had an exhibition showing the work of the Society, the Fuji Declaration, the Soul of WoMen  conference and displays of the ‘Peace Prevails’ school programme and photos showing a calendar of events taking place at Allanton Sanctuary since June 2015 which was our last Festival.

The highlight of the afternoon was the exquisite Japanese dance performed by Michiko Abe, which was followed by the World Peace Flag Ceremony. The Flag Ceremony was accompanied by the Allanton Peace Choir led by Kate Howard. The choir sang at the beginning of each continent the following songs:

After the Flag Ceremony, everyone was invited to pick up a flag, and  (accompanied by the Taiko drums) carry it outside to the Peace Pole Henge. A parade of all the flags made its way to the henge and everyone walked inside and around the henge. It was very powerful and moving. This is the first event that has been held in our newly completed Peace Pole Henge.

When the flags had been returned to the marquee, it was time to enjoy Uma’s special curry and listen to music from local musicians which completed a wonderful afternoon!

Last week, the Allanton Sanctuary, located in Auldgirth, Dumfries in Scotland, hosted a 3 day-workshop/gathering for 16 students from the Anniesland College in Glasgow, Scotland. The students are from: Afghanistan, Burundi, China, Eritrea, Iran, Kurdistan, Lithuania, Somalia, The Democratic Republic of Congo

Although these students have only been living in the United Kingdom for less than a year, they have been studying hard and their English is very good now. The College has been running a special programme to help the students integrate into this culture.

Staff of the Allanton Sanctuary invited the local high school students to the gathering. They all took part in an activity called, ‘what peace means’ as individuals, in the community, in the world and in the environment. The students from both schools got along quite well. Together they enjoyed working, talking, dancing and having fun. Bonds were made, and ‘facebook’ and ‘twitter’ addresses exchanged.

The visit culminated in a World Peace Flag Ceremony and the students from Anniesland College carried the flag of their own country and sent wish and prayer, May Peace Prevail On Earth to their homeland.

The ‘May Peace Prevail on Earth’ (MPPOE) School Programme- The 1st teachers’ training session took place on January 29th, 2010 and the 2nd session took place on March 31st, 2010.

Thus far, 24 teachers have been trained this year from 6 schools to run the ‘May Peace Prevail on Earth’ school programme as part of their school curriculum.

Allanton Sanctuary presented a World Peace Flag Ceremony at 6 primary schools in the Oldham area of Manchester, England during 2009 – at which time all had Peace Poles planted on school campus’.

The ‘May Peace Prevail on Earth’  (MPPOE) School Programme, 1-day teachers’ training session took place on January 29^th, 2010 and Nineteen school teachers from the 6 primary schools attended. The training session was conducted to instruct the teachers on how to incorporate the Programme into their everyday teaching practice.  The goal is to have the MPPOE School Programme implemented into the school curriculum.

A local teacher who had adopted the MPPOE School Programme in 2007, also attended. “This was fantastic because she was able to answer the practical questions- and could show and explain that programme really does work!”

TWO pupils have scooped prestigious international awards after their school spread the message of peace and goodwill across the borough.
Youngsters at St Paul’s Primary School, Royton, have been passing on the wisdom of

 “May Peace Prevail on Earth”.
It is one of the first schools in England to pursue the Peace Education Programme written by Glenda Thornton, associated with The World Peace Prayer Society and The Allanton Sanctuary in Scotland and has been active in the promotion of The World Peace Flag Ceremony throughout Oldham.
As part of the work to spread the message of international peace and community cohesion, three classes — Year One, Two and Five — took part in the 12th Annual Peace Pals International Art Exhibition and Awards, a Programme of The World Peace Prayer Society-Nurturing inner peace and global awareness in youth around the world. They were asked to design and create a piece of artwork which celebrated and illustrated the message, May Peace Prevail On Earth, and incorporated the theme for the 2009 Peace Pals International Exhibition and Awards.
Judges received 4,000 entries from 33 countries, and two talented pupils emerged triumphant, with Amelia Hall (10) awarded a ‘Highly Commended’ and classmate Mia Newman (10) granted the ‘Ambassador for Peace for England’ award.
The duo’s achievements were celebrated in an assembly, where they received certificates for their artwork.
Jane Jefferson, who coordinated the project and delivers the Peace Education Programme in the school, said: “We are very proud of our pupils’ achievement.
“We at St Paul’s are dedicated to the vision of community cohesion and international peace.
“Our links with The World Peace Prayer Society is helping us as a school to move forward in our work towards a happier, more contented and peaceful society.
“The message is that peace begins within us all and this philosophy was expressed beautifully by our pupils through the art competition. We are so proud that their efforts and attitudes have been internationally recognised.”

At The World Peace Prayer Society- Allanton Sanctuary, each totem guardian for the garden gate embodies an element from nature and the animal kingdom.  A planetary guardian carved from Hawthorn, watches over from one of the pillars. The wood used has been taken from the grounds of Allanton Sanctuary. The Elm, Holly and Hawthorn wer standing dead trees. They have been brought back to life with new purpose. Sculptor and friend, Richard Brockbank,  says “I am pleased with the sculpture as a whole. It provides a welcome and at the same time there is a lot that can be discovered by taking time to explore the details which are  not at first obvious – the rabbit at the base of one of the columns and the butterfly on top of another, for example. The form of the wording on the welcome post  inside the garden, ‘Well Come to our Garden” is also done deliberately to encourage people to stop and notice the specialness of the place” The dedication plaque reads: ” Garden Gateway Sculptures. Gift of the Goi Peace Foundation to Allanton Sanctuary. In honour of our mutual values: Reverence for Life. Respect for All Differences. Gratitude for and co-existence with All of Nature.  Harmony between the Spiritual and Material.
